![]() I did have a strong reaction to the abrupt ending. ![]() This is a great read for those who don't mind gore and love a fast paced novel. Keene's zombies are a smarter, faster, updated version of the living dead. They must make their way through the undead to reach Jim's son before it's too late. The story follows Jim - a father who is making his way across the country to save his son - and a group of survivors who join him along the way. The Rising is an excellent zombie novel with non-stop action and a great cast of characters. And for Jim and his companions, an even greater evil awaits them at the end of their journey. They must battle both the living and the living dead. Joined by an elderly preacher, a guilt-ridden scientist, and a determined ex-prostitute, Jim embarks on a cross-country rescue mission. Despite overwhelming odds, Jim vows to find him- or die trying. But Jim’s young son is alive and in dire peril hundreds of miles away. ![]() Trapped by the undead, escape seems impossible for Jim Thurmond. ![]() The dead are returning to life as intelligent zombies. The Rising by Brian Keene is one of my favorite debut novels of all time. ![]()

![]() The Sorceress’ words were sarcastic and bad-mannered. All that remained of the prehistoric Eyrie was broken beams: a wasteland littered with slabs of fallen wall and jagged panes of the building’s outer shell.īut wreckage was not all that remained of the old world. Vanora’s ribs were ruins, domed supports with nothing to hold. She’d trekked to the end of the earth, and now the Fire Sorceress stood beneath the ribs of Vanora City, a day’s distance from the Scalding Sea: the end of the line. Lovecraft, of course, is hopelessly racist in the original. She never forgot it, and has now returned to the Dreamlands to interrogate the setting. ![]() Kij Johnson read the book as a kid, possibly on the strength of its cutesey, cat-festooned cover. My suspicion is that if The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath were to be written today it would not get out of anyone’s slush pile, for all that it is full of interesting ideas. On the other hand, Lovecraft’s attempts to write longer form fiction cruelly expose his failings as an author. Certainly the Dreamlands are much more of a coherent fantasy universe than his stories set in the real world. ![]() There are those who think that Lovecraft’s Dreamlands Cycle are his best works. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tavia finds herself panicking, because her support for justice in Rhoda's case be used to identify her as a siren. Her world flips upside down when coverage of a news story she's been following about a Black woman killed by her boyfriend becomes complicated by the discovery that the victim may have been a siren. Instead, she's stuck in a place with only a handful of Black folk, and a smaller few who have magic, like her. She should be able to hear her in Portland, where she lives, but she can't. Tavia just wants to hear her long-lost grandmother, who, siren myths have told her, can communicate with her through a body of water. In a world populated with creatures that are only myths in ours, Tavia is a siren - a girl whose powers are supposedly so great that she can lure men to their deaths. Morrow's A Song Below Water, a young adult novel about Black sirens, is coming out next June, and you can start reading it right now. A short novel, Werther makes for an intensely frustrating read. ![]() Enthroning Feeling, he sets consistently at naught social convention, his own wellbeing, and the feelings of his friends and family. Werther has intelligence, and “a noble nature” – but he is also a fanatical Romantic. This epistolary found-material / pseudo-true-story format was popular in Europe at this time Werther exploits this format to offer a short, sharp tale of love. Werther is structured primarily as a series of letters Werther writes to his friend, Wilhelm short segments of the narrative are told in third-person, again based on Werther’s epistolary productions. Werther moves to the countryside, takes up an indolent pastoral life, and promptly falls in love with a woman he knows, from the beginning, is engaged to another man. The Sorrows of Young Werther follows a young man’s love affair. ![]() |
